New leaders announced for key law enforcement agencies
The Hon Michael Keenan MP
Today, I have announced the appointment of  new CEOs for two of Australia's most important law enforcement agencies.
Michael Phelan APM will be the next Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) and the Director of the Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC).
The ACIC is Australia's national criminal intelligence agency with specialist investigative capabilities, dedicated to combating serious and organised crime.
Nicole Rose PSM will be the next CEO of the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC).
AUSTRAC plays an important role as Australia's anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing regulator and specialist financial intelligence unit.
Mike Phelan has had a long career with the Australian Federal Police since 1985. He has held numerous roles within the police force, including Deputy Commissioner positions from 2010 to his current role as the Deputy Commissioner of National Security.
Mr Phelan has Bachelor of Laws and Commerce degrees from Deakin University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Melbourne.  He received the National Medal in 2000 and was awarded the Australian Police Medal in the 2008 Australia Day Honours.
Nicole Rose has worked as Deputy Secretary Criminal Justice Group at the Attorney-General's Department, was Deputy and Acting CEO of the ACIC and worked as the Director of the Office of the New South Wales Police Commissioner.
She has tertiary qualifications in Business and Management and has completed the Vincent Fairfax Fellowship in Ethical Leadership at Melbourne University.  In 2013, she was awarded the Public Service Medal for services to policing.
Both Mr Phelan and Ms Rose will commence as CEOs of the ACIC and AUSTRAC on 13 November 2017.
On behalf of the Government, I congratulate Mr Phelan and Ms Rose on their appointments, and thank them for their willingness to serve the Australian people in these important roles.
