YOU DON’T GET MORE GRADUATES BY CUTTING UNIS AND JACKING UP FEES
THE HON TANYA PLIBERSEK MP
In a sign of just how desperate Malcolm Turnbull’s hopeless government has become, the education minister has been running around this morning arguing the way to get more uni graduates is to cut funding, jack up fees, increase student debt, and support his plan for a ministerial slush fund.
The Liberals have completely lost it.
You don't encourage more students to graduate from university by cutting funding, jacking up fees, and increasing student debt. But that's what the Liberals want to do. You don't encourage more students to graduate from university by creating a slush fund so the minister can cut uni funding on a whim. But that's what the Liberals want to do.
In their fifth year of government, all the Liberals have done is repeatedly try to cut uni funding and make students pay more - for a poorer quality education. It’s a complete rip-off. That’s why the Parliament has refused to support the Liberals’ plan.
Year 12 students and others, are already trying to make decisions about what to study at uni in 2018. But thanks to the uncertainty created by Mr Turnbull, they have no idea how much their degrees will cost.
He should drop his unfair plan now, and for good.
For the Liberals, this has always been about finding Budget savings, not about strengthening unis, helping students, or preparing our economy for the future.
If it’s Budget savings the Liberals want, Labor can help.
Instead of cutting unis, how about the Liberals:
Dump their big business tax cut - $65 billion saved.
Dump their tax cut for people on more than $180K a year - $19 billion saved.
Crack down on negative gearing and capital gains tax concession – $37 billion saved.
That’s well more than $100 billion saved, without breaking a sweat.
The Liberals want to rob students and unis to pay big business and millionaires.
Their priorities are all wrong.
