INEQUALITY GROWING UNDER TURNBULL
BRENDAN O’CONNOR MP
Reports today of new economic research from the Centre of Policy Studies provides yet more evidence that Turnbull and his Liberals are presiding over growing inequality in Australia, and have no plans to address it.
While overall wages have stagnated under Turnbull - hitting record low levels of growth – modelling from Dr Dixon and Dr Tran reveals that the wages of low-paid workers have not grown at all.
Neither the Prime Minister, Treasurer nor the Minister for Employment have a single policy to grow wages and reduce inequality.
The only plan the Liberals have is their cuts to penalty rates for the very workers whose wages are at a stand-still, coupled with a tax increase for these workers, yet tax cuts and handouts for the top end of town.
They have absolutely no agenda to tackle growing insecurity and casualisation in our labour market.
Turnbull’s claims that he is guiding the economy forward have been completely undermined. He makes claims that business confidence is at a 20 year high – all the while ignoring the growing inequality in our workforce and its negative impact on workers and the economy.
He is the self-proclaimed emperor, but he has no clothes.
Meanwhile, workers continue to feel the pinch of stagnant wages growth.
Australians deserve a government that understands that the challenges in Australia’s labour market and workplaces are real, and puts people’s wellbeing above corporate profits.
