LABOR WELCOMES DECISION ON WOMEN’S WORLD CUP BID FUNDING
SENATOR DON FARRELL
Labor welcomes the announcement today that the Government will provide the full $5 million it pledged to Football Federation Australia (FFA) to support the bid to host the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Bill Shorten and I announced Labor’s support for the bid in June last year.

Labor has consistently lobbied the Government to provide the additional $4 million to ensure the FFA can prepare a high quality, compelling bid.

Hosting the FIFA 2023 Women’s World Cup would provide a great boost to ongoing growth in women’s participation in sport in Australia.

Following their outstanding recent success, our Matildas are currently preparing for the 2018 AFC Asian Women’s Cup to be held in Jordan in April.

After the historic sell-out of their match against Brazil in Penrith last year, it is easy to imagine how great it would be to have the Matildas playing such an important international tournament in front of home crowds in Australia.

Having supported the FFA in its efforts to see Australia host the Women’s World Cup in 2023 from the word go, Labor is pleased the Government has got on board.

We are committed to supporting ongoing growth in women’s participation in sport – we are committed to supporting continued improvements in opportunity, in participation and in professionalism.
