POWER PRICES RISE UNDER TURNBULL
THE HON MARK BUTLER MP
The latest ABS price data confirms Malcolm Turnbull’s energy crisis is continuing, with power and gas prices still going up, and up, and up.
The ABS Consumer Price Index data released today shows under Malcolm Turnbull’s inaction, power prices skyrocketed nationally by almost 12 per cent in the last year.
The government’s argument that rising power prices are linked to renewable energy is put to bed by the fact Sydney power prices rose by almost 14 per cent, more than the national average, even though NSW doesn’t have a renewable energy target and one of the nation’s lowest levels of renewable energy generation.
The government’s declaration that the east coast gas crisis has been solved by a handshake agreement between the Prime Minister and gas exporters doesn’t stack up.
Households across Australia have seen their gas prices increase by 6 per cent in the last 3 months alone, all of this increase occurring since Malcolm Turnbull and Josh Frydenberg declared gas prices were coming down.
Under the government’s proposed National Energy Guarantee, the energy investment paralysis will continue with modelling showing there will be no large-scale renewable energy project built during the decade of the 2020s.
Households and businesses are continuing to bear the brunt of Malcolm Turnbull’s policy paralysis and weakness in standing up to the hard right climate change deniers of his party room.
Only Labor will deliver an energy future which will ensure Australian gas supply for Australian users, drive investment in renewables, bring down power prices, and cut our pollution levels.
