Aussie Veterinarians protecting the nation

The work of Australia’s dedicated veterinarians is being celebrated with World Veterinary Day recognising the work of vets, which includes supporting the nation’s enviable biosecurity status.

Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, David Littleproud, said vets play an important part in protecting Australia’s agricultural industries and environment.

“Australia is free from some of the world’s worst pests and diseases thanks largely to the work of vets," Minister Littleproud said.

"Vets develop animal welfare health policies and do great work on the ground.

“Australian vets are among the world leaders in detecting and treating animal diseases, essential in protecting Australia’s food safety.”

This year’s theme is The role of the veterinary profession in sustainable development to improve livelihoods, food security and safety—a vital consideration with world demand for food is set to rise by 75 per cent on the 2007 levels by 2050.

“The health of many humans relies on the work of vets who detect, monitor and control animal diseases. The department works closely with colleagues internationally and in the health sector to prevent the spread of diseases from animals to people.” Mr Littleproud said.

“The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources is one of Australia’s largest employers of vets with around 140 employed to make sure Australian livestock and fishing industries remain healthy, profitable and competitive.

“Australian vets also take their skills to developing countries to help them strengthen their veterinary services to support livestock productivity abroad.”

World Veterinary Day is celebrated on the third Saturday of April each year to raise general awareness about the contribution vets make in public health, food safety and animal welfare.
