SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SENATORS’ JOINT MOVE FOR JUDICIAL INQUIRY
SENATOR THE HON PENNY WONG
South Australian senators will unite when Parliament resumes next week to pressure Prime Minister Turnbull to commission a national judicial inquiry into allegations of theft and corruption aired on Four Corners last Monday.
Next week I will move a motion in the Senate calling on the Turnbull Government to commission a national judicial inquiry to investigate the allegations.
Nobody understands the need to protect the River Murray better than South Australians. Our communities and economy depend on the River like no other State and we see firsthand what happens when those upstream fail to do the right thing.
That’s why I’m so pleased that Senators Bernardi, Hanson-Young and Xenophon have agreed to jointly move the motion when Parliament resumes next week.
I invite South Australian Liberal Senators to join us in our demand for a proper inquiry.
The basin needs an inquiry that will get to the bottom of what has happened. The Turnbull Government is merely offering a process to sweep these allegations under the carpet.
Only a national judicial inquiry through the COAG process which can thoroughly and properly investigate these allegations will restore confidence in the government’s management of the Murray-Darling Basin Plan for all communities.
