THE LIBERALS: HOLDING AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS BACK
THE HON TANYA PLIBERSEK MP ANDREW GILES MP
The NAPLAN results released today show how foolish it is that the Liberals are giving schools less funding, and have no plan to improve them.
In Government, Labor put conditions on its extra needs based funding to drive improvement in schools.
For example, along with extra funding, Labor introduced targets for schools including: getting Australia into the top five countries in the world for reading, maths, and science; better teaching quality; and more power for principals.
Back in 2013, the Liberals dumped those targets and conditions. Four years on, they have replaced them with nothing.
Our schools do terrific work, but the Liberals are holding them back.
NAPLAN is just one measure of how students are doing at school. It’s pleasing to see there has been some progress in certain areas, in some states. But Australia should be doing much better across the board.
Labor has always believed that the point of extra needs based funding is to improve schools, giving our kids the best chance to succeed.
We want better schools, better results, and better support for our great teachers.
Every student, in every school, deserves a great education.
That’s what Labor will fight for, every single day, between now and the next election.
