Dolphins ready for kick off at Redcliffe Stadium

The Dolphins and Seagulls are ready to battle it out for the Herald Press Cup this Sunday, coinciding with the opening of stage two of the new Rugby League Dolphins Stadium in Redcliffe.

 

Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government John McVeigh said the project will deliver significant economic and social benefits to the community.

“Completion of stage two of the new Rugby League Dolphins Stadium, including the 3,000 seat Eastern Stand, brings the stadium’s capacity to 10,000 fans,” Dr McVeigh said.

“The stadium now has the capacity to accommodate large functions and full broadcasting capabilities for televised games, providing a boost for the region.

“These works supported over 280 jobs during construction and will help sustain another 230 ongoing jobs, which means more families spending more, investing more and driving more jobs and confidence in the local community.”

Minister for Sport and Senator for Victoria Bridget McKenzie said the upgraded facilities represented a major boost for football players and spectators in Redcliffe and the surrounding area.

“The Dolphins Academy, completed as part of stage two includes data and training rooms to create a hub for the Dolphins Rugby League Development program which provides opportunities on and off the field,” Senator McKenzie said.

“As Minister for Sport I want to see more Australians, more active, more often and this quality facility will help make that possible.”

Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth who celebrated with Dolphins fans today said the completion of the Eastern Grandstand was a momentous moment for the 71 year old club.

“We have a great sporting culture here in Moreton Bay and I’d like to thank the local residents who have worked so hard to make this project a reality,” Mr Howarth said.

 

“These upgrades will allow the stadium to accommodate big games of rugby league, rugby union and soccer which is critical to attracting top teams, such as the upcoming Brisbane Roar v Melbourne City FFA Cup Game.

“Located less than 2 kilometres from the Redcliffe Peninsula Train line, and with the great parking available, I look forward to seeing more matches at this great stadium.”

Mayor of Moreton Bay Regional Council Allan Sutherland said the upgrade re-affirmed the region’s pedigree as a top-flight destination for sport and major events, and Moreton Bay’s potential as a home for a new team in the National Rugby League competition.

“Moreton Bay has already reaped the benefits of stage one, recently hosting the international Rugby League Commonwealth Championship, NRL pre-season matches and FFA cup,” Mayor Sutherland said.

“Construction of stage two has been a driver for local construction jobs, and will have long-term economic benefits for our businesses and accommodation providers, and the thousands of locals they employ.

“It’s been 71 years since the first Dolphins team took to the field, with footy greats like Arthur Beeston, Petero Civinoceva and Brent Tate coming out of the prestigious program, and I have no doubt the completion of this boutique stadium will catapult Moreton Bay’s bid for a place in the NRL.”

The Rugby League Dolphins Stadium upgrade was jointly funded with the Coalition Government investing $4 million, Queensland Government $1.12 million, Moreton Bay Regional Council $3.875 million and Redcliffe Leagues Club and the Mount Alexander Shire Council $68,883.
