THE STORIES TURNBULL DIDN’T WANT YOU TO HEAR
CLARE O’NEIL MP
Last night, ABC’s Four Corners delved deeper into the shocking allegations coming out of the Royal Commission that AMP mislead the regulator 20 times, charged clients for no services and put profits before customers.

The report last night and the evidence at the Royal Commission to date have shown how AMP systematically cheated Australians and then attempted to cover it up. But AMP is not alone – these are examples of instances of misconduct we have seen across the banking sector.

These are the stories that the Liberals, as they fought against the establishment of a Royal Commission, never wanted Australians to hear. For over 600 days, Malcolm Turnbull fought tooth and nail against having the Royal Commission.

Here’s what senior Liberals said when they were running a protection racket for the banks:

“It is nothing more than a populist whinge from Bill Shorten.”
-       Scott Morrison, Interview with Peter Van Onselen & Paul Kelly, Sky News Australian Agenda (7 August 2016)

“We have got to stop the banks and our financial services sector being used as political football… I agree with Scott, this is essentially a regrettable but necessary action.”
-       Malcolm Turnbull and Scott Morrison announcing the Royal Commission, Doorstop (30 November 2017)

“I would be staggered if the Coalition proposed a Banking Royal Commission. That is rank socialism.”
-       John Howard, Sky News Interview (23 November 2017)

Turnbull and the Liberals appear to care more about the big banks and financial institutions than they do about the many Australians who have been ripped off by this sector.

Instead of cracking down on this conduct, now Malcolm Turnbull wants to reward the big banks with a $17 billion tax cut, money that could otherwise be invested in schools and hospitals used by everyday Australians.

Labor will continue to fight for ordinary Australians – fair funding for the schools are kids are educated in, for the hospitals looking after our families, and fair rules for a financial sector on which almost every Australian person and business relies.
