LABOR WILL ALWAYS CALL OUT BIGOTRY
TONY BURKE MP
Labor will always call out and oppose attempts to ridicule, offend, insult, humiliate or intimidate people for their ethnic origin or faith.
Whether it’s commentary mocking the Prime Minister’s Pentecostal faith, or recent occasions where language has been used against people whose faith is in the traditions of Islam and Judaism, the denigration of someone’s faith has no place in modern Australia.
Bigotry needs to opposed wherever it occurs. It is never acceptable and there is no right to be a bigot.
In Australia people have a right to practice their faith if they have one. If people do not have a religious faith they have a similar right to be left alone and also suffer no discrimination.
The fact that various members of the government have engaged in language which targets other cultures and faiths should not be used as a justification for another form of bigotry.
There are plenty of policy reasons to oppose the Abbott-Turnbull-Morrison Government, and that is where the debate should lie.
