Scholarships for regional students

Students living in rural, regional and remote Australia will get financial support to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) courses. 

Eligible students can access up to $18,000 towards the cost of studying at university or a vocational education and training institution through the $24 million Rural and Regional Enterprise Scholarships program which is now open. 

More than 1,200 rural, regional and remote students will receive support through the program that is already supporting more than 500 students. New guidelines will also make it easier for drought-affected students to apply, including families receiving the Farm Household Allowance. 

Minister for Education Dan Tehan encouraged students in rural, regional and remote Australia to apply for the scholarships. 

“Educational opportunities should be open to every Australian, no matter where they live,” Mr Tehan said. “We also want to encourage more students to study STEM, because that is where many of the future jobs will be.” 

Minister for Small and Family Business, Skills and Vocational Education Senator Michaelia Cash said that according to some studies it is predicted that three in every four Australian jobs of the future will require STEM skills. 

“We know STEM skills will play a critical role in the future workforce, we want to make sure we are equipping the students today for the jobs of the future and, in particular, ensuring our regional economies are equipped to participate in future opportunities,” Ms Cash said. 

The program also supports students by allowing flexible study arrangements, as well as additional funding so students can apply for internships and be job-ready.
