GOOD LUCK TO OUR ATHLETES COMPETING AT THE INVICTUS GAMES
BILL SHORTEN MP
Federal Labor congratulates Australia’s Invictus Games team and wishes them the best of luck as they represent our nation in Sydney this week.
Australia will host the Games for the first time and field our biggest ever team, with 72 current and former serving personnel competing alongside athletes from 17 other nations at Sydney’s Olympic Park, on Sydney’s streets and on Sydney Harbour.
The Invictus Games are open to competitors from all branches of the regular or reserve Armed Forces of participating nations who have become wounded, injured or ill during, or as a direct consequence of, their service.
Invictus is Latin for ‘unconquered’. The Invictus Games use the power of sport as a catalyst to motivate recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding of and respect for serving and ex-service personnel.
We are all thankful of the service and sacrifice Australian men and women have made for our freedoms. In some cases, the cost of this sacrifice has led to life-changing injuries, both visible and invisible.
Over the course of the week more than 500 athletes from 18 nations will compete for medals in 11 adaptive sports and also participate in golf and wheelchair tennis.
We are incredibly proud of the service and commitment of our current and ex-service men and women.
Labor will be cheering on Australia’s athletes as our wounded warriors overcome adversity and represent their country once again as they compete next week in the spirit of Invictus.
