AUSTRALIA RE-ELECTED TO ITU COUNCIL

Australia has been re-elected to the Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for 2018 to 2022. 

Elections took place during the ITU’s Plenipotentiary Conference in Dubai with 179 countries taking part.

 

The ITU is a United Nations agency that works with governments and industry to make decisions on the global communications networks that underpin the technologies Australians use every day. Australia’s position on Council enables us to shape the outcomes of the ITU’s important work.

 

Australia’s re-election is a welcome result following an extensive campaign.

 

Australia will continue to promote a collaborative approach to the ITU’s activities and work to improve its efficiency and effectiveness. This will support Australia’s commercial and strategic interests in reliable, affordable and seamlessly interconnected global communications.

Australia has been a member of the Council since 1959 and is a leading financial contributor and active participant. Australia has a pivotal role in the ITU’s development work across the Asia-Pacific region which includes improving access to affordable internet connectivity and building capacity in the region to address cyber security challenges.
