GOVERNMENT BUILDING CODE BACK DOWN
THE HON BRENDAN O’CONNOR
The Turnbull Government has already been forced to retreat from its draconian building code because it goes too far.
It has today been reported that the Turnbull Government is exempting essential services infrastructure from the Building Code.
If the Building Code is too severe and unfair for essential service workers, then why is the same test not applied to all construction workers?
The Turnbull Government should take a step back from its ideological obsession with attacking unions and realise that for the same reasons that essential services are being exempted from draconian laws, so too should construction workers.
The Building Code prohibits enterprise agreements having conditions that deal with the number of apprentices, local jobs and safety issues. Why should they be denied these rights?
The Liberal Government's return of the ABCC and implementation of the Building Code is simply part of their anti-worker, ideological agenda.
