BISHOP CALLS OUT LIBERALS’ DIVISIVE CLIMATE DENIALISM
SENATOR THE HON PENNY WONG
Labor welcomes the call by former Foreign Minister and Deputy Liberal Leader Julie Bishop for the Liberal Party to drop its relentless, ideologically driven climate change denialism and inaction.
The Liberals are divided, chaotic and completely out of touch on climate change – as Ms Bishop points out “the opinion polls consistently show strong community support action on climate change.”
Ms Bishop’s call came as Energy Minister Angus Taylor continued his war against action on climate change and recommitted to spending billions of taxpayers’ dollars on new expensive and polluting coal-fired power stations.
During another train wreck interview the Minister continued the lie that Australia is “on track”to meet the Government’s already inadequate Paris climate targets despite the latest OECD report finding Australia will “fall short of its 2030 emissions target”
The Government’s own data shows carbon pollution levels have been rising since the election of Tony Abbott as Prime Minister, with Australia on track to miss the government’s 2030 target of a 26 per cent cut in carbon pollution by a full 19 per cent.
Continuing the decade long baseless scare campaign on climate action, Minister Taylor claimed serious climate change policy “will see Gladstone shut, it will see Mackay shut down, the sugar growers the aluminum sector, the cement sector.”
We all remember when Tony Abbott declared climate change policy would ‘wipe Whyalla off the map’ and Barnaby Joyce claimed a lamb roast would cost $100.
Australians need a Shorten Labor Government which will invest in renewables, bring energy prices under control and ensure affordable gas supply for Australians.
