LIBERALS’ INCOMPETENCE BLOCKING SUPER BILL PASSAGE
CHRIS BOWEN MP
The Liberals’ lies about superannuation are a desperate distraction from their dysfunction and chaos. These bills haven’t progressed the Parliament because the Liberals haven’t brought them on for a vote.
Labor is the architect of Australia’s compulsory superannuation system and we will always fight to protect and strengthen it. Our one priority in superannuation is making sure members’ interests are put first.
Labor has repeatedly told the Government we will work with them to pass superannuation bills – but week after week they fail to bring them on for debate.
We made our position clear on the Government’s Protecting Your Super Package in November 2018 – we support the bill but will move amendments to protect workers and ensure accounts are consolidated faster. Our release from November last year is below. Our position has not changed.
The Government shopped around amendments to water down this package, but these amendments failed to protect low-income workers in high-risk occupations and mums on maternity leave. They weren’t strong enough.
The Government also refused to agree to Labor’s changes to consolidate accounts faster – preferring to keep that money in the ATO to artificially inflate their budget numbers than let Australian workers earn interest. This left members worse-off.
Labor wants to strengthen this package – the rorts and rip offs in the superannuation sector have to stop. The fees and unintended accounts are a disgrace, and we want to end them.
To Stuart Robert and Josh Frydenberg, Labor’s message is simple: bring this bill on for a vote.
The Liberals are a dysfunctional, chaotic mess and can’t bring their superannuation bills to a vote. They don’t care about workers, they don’t care about the performance of Australia’s superannuation system and they can’t even debate these bills in Parliament.
The Liberals have had six years to do something about superannuation, but instead they’ve focused on playing politics – preferring ideology and attacks on industry funds to real reform.
Standing up for workers is Labor’s defining mission. Only Labor can be trusted to protect workers, crack down on dodgy funds and employers, and stand up for workers in retirement.
