LABOR WILL INVEST IN BRIGHTON GRASSROOTS SPORT
SENATOR DON FARRELL
A Shorten Labor government will provide $5 million towards a major redevelopment of Brighton’s community sports precinct, supporting a big boost in participation and active recreation.

The Brighton Oval Complex is home to Brighton Cricket Club, Brighton Rugby Union Football Club, Brighton Bombers Football Club and Brighton Lacrosse Club, with Brighton Croquet Club and Holdfast Bay Dog Centre also located in the precinct.

About 1400 local players use the existing facilities, with the planned redevelopment expected to boost local sporting participation across the clubs by more than 700, including a 53.2 per cent increase in female participation.

Federal Labor Candidate for Boothby Nadia Clancy, who grew up in the area and lives locally, said she was aware of the importance of the complex to local people.

“I am proud to have advocated for our community and secured funding that will mean better facilities and spaces that everyone will be able to use and enjoy,” she said.

“This is an important project that’s going to provide tremendous benefits to the community across Boothby and support their health physically, mentally and socially.”

Labor’s contribution will support stage two of the plans, Improvements including:

  • A new fitness hub;
  • Nine new cricket nets;
  • Upgraded lighting for the lacrosse pitch;
  • New half-court basketball court;
  • Multi-use community grassed area and redeveloped play-space;
  • Upgrades to Highet Ave traffic measures, access, parking, paving & drainage.

Labor is committed to supporting clubs and communities to improve local sporting facilities to give all Australians a fair go at sport, whether they dream of one day representing Australia or just want to enjoy the benefits of being physically active.

Our investments in local community sporting clubs and facilities like these help them build capacity to meet the welcome growth in female participation in club sport and support more Australians to live active, healthy lifestyles.

We can invest in a sporting chance for all Australians because Labor has made the tough budget decisions to make multinationals pay their fair share of tax, close tax loopholes used by the top end of town, and we won’t give the big banks a tax cut.
