LABOR GIVES CURTIN UNIVERSITY $3 MILLION TECH EDUCATION BOOST

Curtin University will get new world class augmented and virtual reality equipment thanks to a $3 million investment from Federal Labor.
The Deputy Labor Leader, Tanya Plibersek, said Curtin’s Hub for Immersive Visualisation & eResearch (HIVE) has been a leader in augmented and virtual reality since it opened in 2013.
“But it needs upgraded equipment to keep pace with the latest advances in technology,” Ms Plibersek said.
“Labor’s investment will also support industry training at Curtin.
“Importantly for Western Australia, it will allow mining, oil, gas, and agriculture businesses to more easily partner with the university on training, research, and development.
“This is about getting Western Australian students the education they need for the high tech jobs of the future,” Ms Plibersek said.
Labor’s candidate for Swan, Hannah Beazley, said the HIVE at Curtin has virtual reality mine environments for training, and is doing research into visual fields and balance in people with autism.
“It has also supported significant historic digital recreations, including of HMAS Sydney (II) and HSK Kormoran.
“This is an important investment for the local community. Curtin University already has a strong record when it comes to innovation, and this will help cement its place as one of the nation’s leading universities in this field.
“I want our kids to have access to world leading education and the best cutting-edge technology,” Ms Beazley said.
As well as its own in-house technology, the HIVE uses the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre for larger, more complex visualisations.
This $3 million investment is part of Labor’s $300 million University Future Fund.
