Stronger education links between Australia and Indonesia

Australia’s education relationship with Indonesia will be strengthened with the signing in Jakarta of the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. 

Minister for Education Dan Tehan said the Agreement, once ratified, would benefit both nations. 

“Indonesia is an important education partner with Australia, with engagement across all education sectors,” Mr Tehan said. 

“Indonesia ranks tenth in terms of enrolments at Australian education institutions (20,895 in 2018) and academic, student and researcher mobility between our two countries is strong. 

“The Australian Government looks forward to collaborating with Indonesia and taking advantage of the opportunities that will arise through the Ministerial Decree on Foreign Universities.” 

Minister for Small and Family Business, Skills and Vocational Education Senator Michaelia Cash also welcomed the signing of the Partnership Agreement. 

“I look forward to Australian VET providers having opportunities to deliver more skills training in Indonesia, forging closer links with our largest neighbour,” Minister Cash said. 

“Australia has a strong reputation for quality international education, including in VET, and the qualifications Australian providers can deliver will help Indonesia skill its workforce into the future. 

“Partnering in skills development to equip workers for the jobs of the future will help expand trade between our countries, benefiting economic growth and prosperity in both Australia and Indonesia,” Minister Cash said. 

International education is one of Australia’s largest exports, contributing $35 billion to the Australian economy in 2018 and supporting more than 240,000 jobs across our major cities and key regional areas.
