LABOR WILL INVEST IN THE NEXT STAGE OF THE SOUTH ROAD UPGRADE

A Shorten Labor Government will invest $1.2 billion to deliver the next stage in the ongoing upgrade of South Road into a non-stop motorway, with priority to be given to the section between Glenelg Tram Overpass and Tonsley.
If elected, funding will be our very first budget, with the State Government required to match it dollar-for-dollar.
South Road is one of Adelaide’s most important transport corridors. Running a distance of 78 kilometres between Gawler and Old Noarlunga, it is the major route for north and south bound traffic.
However, the road is increasingly congested, plagued by high accident rates and
is unable to cater for the heavy vehicles needing to use it. It is not fit for the State’s future needs.
Too many South Australians are spending too long commuting to and from work when they should be enjoying time with their family and loved ones.
Urban congestion not only erodes our quality of life, it also harms the economy.
Without ongoing investment in transformative projects like the South Road Upgrade the annual economic cost of congestion in Adelaide alone will more than double to $3.8 billion by 2031.
This project will provide a local jobs and construction boost.
Labor will make sure that locals get the employment benefits from this investment and we will make sure the builders of the North-South Corridor put locals first when hiring.
Successful bidders as part of this project will be required to undertake local labour market testing, which means putting ads in papers and online to give local companies and workers the best shot at getting a job.
Like all major infrastructure projects a Shorten Labor Government will support, apprentices will be at the front of the queue. We will make sure one in every ten workers on the project will be a local apprentice.
Labor is committed to investing in Adelaide.
And anyone who questions Labor’s bona fides when it comes infrastructure, need look no further than our record the last time we had the privilege of governing this great nation.
All up, we tripled annual investment in the State’s infrastructure to $273 per South Australian. As part of this unprecedented capital works program we built the Northern Expressway, constructed the South Road Superway, upgraded South Road between Torrens Road and River Torrens, and extended the rail line to Seaford.
By contrast, under the current Abbott-Turnbull-Morrison Government Federal investment in South Australia will fall to $135 million in 2020-21. That means the State will receive just three per cent of the Federal infrastructure budget despite being home to seven per cent of the national population.
