GOVERNMENT’S LOW WAGE FAIL
BRENDAN O’CONNOR MP
The Morrison Government has one plan for wages – to keep them low.
This morning’s gaffe by newly minted Minister Linda Reynolds was not only cringe worthy, it clarified, once again, this government’s intention to keep wages as low as possible.
Asked this morning on ‘Speers On Sunday’ if she agreed with the sentiment expressed by the Finance Minister Mathias Cormann that keeping wages low is a deliberate feature of our economic architecture, she performed a two-step double pike. Firstly she disagreed with the sentiment, wrongly claiming it was a suggestion of Bill Shorten. Having then learnt it was a comment from her Finance Minister Mathias Cormann, she back-flipped, commenting:
“He’s absolutely right”
SKY NEWS, SUNDAY, 10 MARCH 2019.
To dissect – the Liberals “absolutely” believe in keeping wages low. In fact, it is a “deliberate” strategy.
Pulling it all together we have a Finance Minister who says keeping wages low is a “deliberate” strategy of this government. We have a Minister who tried to blame Bill Shorten for her government’s stance on low wages, but failed, and then endorsed the Finance Minister with alacrity. Finally, we have a Prime Minister who’s only idea to pretend to deal with low wages is to offer a tax cut to Australians, however this tax cut is fundamentally lower than Labor’s bigger, better and fairer tax cut plan.
This is a divided, chaotic and completely out of touch Government, with no plan for Australia’s future.
Under this Government, everything is going up except for wages.
As Treasurer and now Prime Minister, Scott Morrison has presided over the lowest wages growth since records began, and yet he wants to further cut the wages of hard working Australians by getting rid of their penalty rates.
Australians deserve a pay rise – and they aren’t getting one under Scott Morrison and his Liberals.
