TAMIL COMMUNITY CENTRE IN DANDENONG

Tony Burke, Labor’s Shadow Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Australia has today announced that a Shorten Labor Government will ensure that the Victorian Tamil Centre is built, in partnership with the Victorian Tamil Association.
The Victorian Tamil Community Centre will allow Victoria’s 40,000-strong and growing Tamil community to enjoy their first ever community home.
The centre will attract visitors from across Melbourne and Victoria, with a primary service focus on the large and vibrant Tamil community in Melbourne’s South-East. It will serve as an iconic landmark for the Tamil community in Australia including language and cultural celebrations, enabling the local Tamil community to converge, share, grow, learn, connect and experience Tamil language and culture.
The Centre will provide essential support and mentoring services to young people and asylum seekers. It will act as a safe environment for Tamil women to seek help in a culturally appropriate space. It will provide an open space for Tamil senior citizens to socialise and participate in wellbeing activities. The Centre will also be available to the broader community.
The total cost of the Victorian Tamil Centre will be $4.53 million, including $3.68 from the Victorian Tamil Association, $500,000 from the Victorian Labor Government and $350,000 from a Shorten Labor Government to make the project a reality.
