STAKEHOLDERS ENDORSE LABOR’S CLIMATE CHANGE ACTION PLAN
MARK BUTLER MP
A Shorten Labor Government will reduce pollution, invest in renewable energy and take real action on climate change – to ensure we hand on a better deal to the next generation.

After six years of chaos, uncertainty and rising pollution under the Liberals, Australians need stability and certainty on climate change policy – that’s what our plan delivers.
Already stakeholders have rushed to endorse our plan.

The Electric Vehicle Council called our strategy for a cleaner transport future, “A game changer that will spur investment and start driving the nation into a cleaner transport future… Labor’s 50 per cent target will finally show industry that Australia is committed to an electric transition and allow greater investment to follow.”
The Climate Council said, “Finally, we are seeing credible policy initiatives aimed at driving down pollution and dealing with climate change.”

Energy Users’ Association of Australia said, “We welcome Labor’s commitment to work with business on a market-based approach to reducing emissions including extending the existing safeguard mechanism, the appropriate use of international offsets, maintaining assistance for Emission Intensive Trade Exposed (EITE) industries, increased Clean Energy Finance Corporation funding and targeted programs to help business manage the transition.”

The Investor Group on Climate Change said, “The Climate Change Action Plan announced today by Labor would be a critical first step to managing the substantial financial risks of climate change and unlocking billions of dollars of new investment.”

The Australian Logistic Council said, “ALC is particularly encouraged by Labor’s plan to boost EV charging capacity in the national road network. Overcoming ‘range anxiety’ is an essential part of delivering swifter EV uptake by freight logistics operators, and the commitment to work with COAG to promote national consistency in charging infrastructure is most welcome.

“We also welcome the aspects of the policy designed to encourage investment in EV technology, especially the commitment to allow businesses to immediately deduct 20 per cent off any new EV valued at more than $20,000, and the intention to use the Australian Investment Guarantee to incentivise the upgrade of heavy vehicles to incorporate modern technology that can help reduce emissions.

“The commitment to develop a Low Emission Transport Strategy is a responsible one, and will help ensure that all modes of transport are making a contribution to emissions reduction.”

The Australian Conservation Foundation said, “It is highly encouraging to see Labor put forward credible policies to cut emissions across transport, manufacturing, energy and other parts of our economy, which stands in contrast to years of inaction by the Coalition government that has resulted in rising climate pollution.”

The Clean Energy Council said it is an “important and comprehensive climate strategy,” adding “carefully managed emissions reduction can deliver big economic opportunities.”

The Smart Energy Council called our renewables target an “important stepping stone in decarbonising the economy.”

APPEA said, “APPEA has welcomed the further detail provided in Labor’s Climate Change Action Plan released today.  The Plan brings some clarity to how Labor’s ambitious emissions reduction target will be met. Importantly, the Plan sets out a proposal to address the treatment of trade-exposed industries including Australia’s LNG export industry.

The Australian Institute said, “Labor’s climate approach has the real potential to actually reduce emissions in line with a credible and achievable emission reduction target of 45% by 2030.”

Farmers for Climate Action said, “We’re constantly reminding politicians that farmers are on the front line of climate change and need to be a key part of its solution. It’s encouraging to see this policy include opportunities for farmers to deliver solutions via an expanded Carbon Farming Initiative.”

The Wilderness Society said, “It is good to see Labor committing to 'stop broad-scale land clearing' and implementing a national deforestation monitoring system as part of their climate policy. Action on deforestation, or land clearing, is sorely needed.

The Business Council of Australia said, “We are pleased to see confirmation that the Labor Party will allow access to limited international permits to help achieve its ambitious emissions reduction target and ensure businesses acquit their emissions liability at least-cost.
