EXPERTS CONCERNED ABOUT LIBERAL’S FAMILY VIOLENCE ‘COUPLES COUNSELLING’
THE HON LINDA BURNEY MP
Experts have expressed serious concerns about the Liberal's moves to issue new contracts for “family relationship services” under the Government’s Families and Communities Program – Specialised Family Violence Services, saying this contradicts established research in the space.
While relationship counselling can be beneficial in many circumstances, it is completely inappropriate in the context of family violence.
This shows that the Liberals are not listening to family violence prevention experts.
First and foremost, all preventing family violence programs should be about keeping women safe.
The Morrison Government should not be rushing through ill-conceived measures ahead of an election. Instead, they ought to be consulting with the experts and specialist family violence services.
A Shorten Labor Government will consult experts and the specialist family violence prevention sector on program implementation – and ensure specialist women’s services are not locked out of service delivery.
Labor will re-establish a National Advisory Group on the prevention of family violence, which was axed by the Liberals – as well as immediately starting work on a new 10-year plan for the prevention of violence against women and their children.
