LABOR SUPPORTS NAISDA DANCE COLLEGE

A Shorten Labor Government will invest $5 million to build the NAISDA Dance College, a new centre for National Indigenous Creative Learning called Naya Wa Yugali (We Dance in Darkinjung language). 
  

Labor’s investment will expand training and career pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students across creative industry-aligned disciplines. 
  

For more than four decades NAISDA Dance College has been Australia’s premier Indigenous training college with a proud tradition of producing the next generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performers. 

Their world-class program has seen high growth in student numbers over the past decade because of their training and holistic wellbeing support model that includes onsite accommodation or accommodation provided through its Homestay Program.   
  

Labor’s investment will support the construction of onsite boarding accommodation for 24 students designed and managed specifically to meet the cultural needs of young Indigenous students away from their communities and home environments for the first time. 

It will also provide the seed funding for the future development of Naya Wa Yugali which will be centred on an outdoor dancing ground. 

Labor has a proud legacy of championing and supporting the special place of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as the first inhabitants and custodians of Australia and the oldest surviving culture on earth.  

This investment will help protect, celebrate and promote Indigenous cultures, languages, arts and song for all Australians to enjoy.  
 

Labor has made tough budget decisions to ensure our priorities are fully paid for – we will make multinationals pay their fair share and close unsustainable tax loopholes.
