LABOR IS SUPPORTING WOMEN’S FOOTBALL IN HAPPY VALLEY

A Shorten Labor Government will invest $270,000 to provide female change rooms for the growing number of women and girls playing at Happy Valley Football Club.
The Happy Valley Vikings field two senior women’s teams – as well as Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 girls’ teams – and like many clubs, they are experiencing unprecedented growth in the number of women and girls registering to play footy.
Amanda Rishworth MP, Member for Kingston, said Labor’s investment would deliver fit-for-purpose female change rooms to support the club’s growing female football program.
“Women’s footy is booming in the south and it is important that local clubs have the facilities they need to support women and girls to get involved in sport,” Ms Rishworth said.
“A lack of appropriate facilities, particularly change rooms, can be a significant barrier to women and girls participating in historically male-dominated sports. I’m proud to be assisting the Happy Valley Vikings to upgrade their facilities and ensure a fair go for women and girls who want to play footy,” Ms Rishworth said.
Shadow Minister for Sport, Senator Don Farrell, said the Adelaide Crows recent AFLW premiership victory – in front of a record crowd for a stand-alone women’s sport event in Australia of 53,034 – would inspire continued growth in female participation.
“Labor is committed to supporting clubs to provide facilities that ensure everyone gets a fair go at sport, whether they dream of being the next Erin Phillips, the next Eleni Glouftsis, or they just want to enjoy the benefits of being physically active,” Senator Farrell said.
Labor will contribute $270,000 towards the $510,000 project, with additional funding expected to be provided by the City of Onkaparinga.
