ELECTIVE SURGERY DEATHS ON THE RISE
CATHERINE KING MP
Because of the Liberals’ hospital cuts a record number of people are dying on waiting lists waiting for elective surgery.
Waiting times for elective surgery have been getting continually worse since the Liberals have been in government.
In the last year of reporting the number of people waiting for elective surgery who died or weren’t contactable increased by almost 10% (to 8,271).
The 2019 AMA Public Hospital Report Card shows that the average waiting time for elective surgery is the worst it’s been in almost 20 years, and that in almost every state the situation is getting worse.
The President of the AMA, Dr Tony Bartone has said:
Under the weight and pressure of an increasing demand, outstripping the rate of population growth, we are struggling to deal with the presentations that do come either into our emergency departments or in terms of dealing with the complex and increasing list of elective surgery that keeps on growing year on year.
Dr Tony Bartone, 20 April 2019
Mr Morrison’s cuts are hurting our hospitals and they are costing lives.
The statistics don’t lie – under Mr Morrison, there’s been a record number of deaths from people waiting for elective surgery.
Things will only get worse under Morrison’s additional $2.8 billion hospital cuts – putting further pressure on emergency departments and elective surgery waiting lists.
This election is a choice – between Labor’s plan to prioritise health and hospitals and the Liberals’ plans for more cuts and handouts to the top end of town.
