LABOR WILL CAP FIXED TERM CONTRACTS
BRENDAN O’CONNOR MP
A Shorten Labor Government will stem the tide of rampant insecure work, providing certainty and security of employment and wages for Australians.
This election is a choice between Labor’s plan to restore penalty rates, or bigger tax loopholes for the top end of town under the Liberals.
More than half of Australia’s workers are in a non-standard employment relationship, such as labour hire, part time work, fixed term contracts or casual employment.
Too many Australians, particularly teachers, nurses and public sector workers, face years of rolling fixed term contacts and endless job insecurity, with no prospect of a permanent position.
A Shorten Labor Government will place a cap on the number of fixed term contracts an employee can be offered before converting them to permanent employment.
Labor will constrain the use of fixed term contracts, setting a limit to four consecutive fixed term contacts, with a 24-month cap, before an employer is required to offer them a permanent part time or full time position.
Under current law, there is no limit set on the number of employment contracts nor the duration of such contracts, which an employee can be compelled to sign.
We have seen numerous examples of workers, bound by continuous fixed term contracts, with no permanency in sight.
Labor's reforms are about protecting workers and giving them and their families a fair go, making sure workers aren’t caught in a cycle of precarious work, which they can’t escape.
Giving workers and their families some certainty to be able to plan ahead – to pay the rent or even plan to buy a house or a car.
Labor will consult with all stakeholders to implement this policy and avoid any unintended consequences, but our aim is to stem the ongoing rollover of fixed term contracts.
This announcement builds on Labor’s commitments to reduce insecure work and get wages moving again.
In stark contrast, for almost six years, the Liberals have done nothing to fix insecure work in Australia, denying it is a problem.
After six years of Liberal cuts and chaos, our united Labor team is ready to deliver a fair go for all Australians.
End the chaos. Vote for change. Vote for Labor.
