UNAUTHORISED HOMOPHOBIC POLITICAL MATERIAL CIRCULATED IN SYDNEY LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS

Reports of homophobic political material being distributed in the Georges River, Canterbury-Bankstown and Bayside council areas of Sydney days out from local government elections on 9 September, are deeply disturbing.

 

These flyers are disgusting, abhorrent and completely unacceptable in a civilised democracy.

 

This is precisely what Labor warned the Turnbull Government against when it decided to pursue its $122 million non-binding postal survey of the Australian public.

 

We understand that these flyers have been referred to the New South Wales Electoral Commission.

 

We have the utmost faith that the impugned flyers will be extensively investigated and the perpetrators of these offensive and unauthorised flyers will be pursued to the fullest extent of the law.
