DIVIDED GOVERNMENT WON’T DELIVER ENERGY BILL RELIEF
THE HON MARK BUTLER MP
Centre Alliance Senator Rex Patrick today claims that he will “withhold support” on tax cuts until Morrison acts to bring down power prices.
There is no sign this divided Government will be any more capable of delivering an energy policy which will bring down power and gas bills than before the election.
This divided Liberal Government has had 14 energy policies and by dumping Malcolm Turnbull, gave up on a consistent national approach to energy policy. Their current plan to spend billions of dollars on expensive new coal-fired power stations, or even more expensive nuclear power stations, will only continue to drive up power bills.
Meanwhile, the ACCC continues to warn of the loss of thousands of manufacturing jobs through the Government’s refusal to impose export controls on the gas industry that would see domestic prices come down from the record highs reached under this Government.
The Government’s pre-election promise was to slash household and business power bills by up to 25 per cent by 2021 but instead wholesale electricity prices have risen by 30 per cent and the gas crisis has continued since Scott Morrison became PM.
