GUARANTEE FUNDING FOR NATIONAL CONGRESS
LINDA BURNEY MP
Labor is calling on the Liberal-National Government to urgently restore funding to the National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples.
National Congress is the only national representative organisation for First Nations people – speaking on behalf of thousands of individuals and hundreds of organisations.
National Congress is currently in voluntary administration and without a commitment from the Government, it will shortly close forever.
For years, National Congress enjoyed bipartisan support. Until Tony Abbott cut its funding.
National Congress has tried to survive without guaranteed support from the Government, but this is simply not viable in the long-term.
Labor has written to Ken Wyatt asking him to urgently restore adequate and secure funding for National Congress.
We have also asked the Government to guarantee that National Congress is provided with no-strings funding, so it is free to advocate on behalf of First Nations Australians.
If the Government is serious about a bipartisan approach to First Nations affairs, genuine reconciliation and a co-design process for a voice to Parliament, National Congress will not be allowed to go under.
It is too important to lose.
At the election, Labor committed to providing National Congress with funding to help co-design a voice to Parliament.
