LIBERAL GOVERNMENT PASSES THE BUCK ON BUILDING SAFETY
BRENDAN O’CONNOR MP
A PWC report released today shows that flammable cladding related issues are damaging the construction industry and yet the government continues to shirk its responsibility.
The report found that projects, certifiers and fire surveyors are struggling to maintain appropriate insurance coverage to carry out their work.
There are serious issues with the use of non-compliant and dangerous flammable cladding on Australian buildings, with the most recent example being cracking in residential apartment blocks.
In the absence of leadership from this government, state governments have taken up the slack, leading the response to these issues.
The regulatory and enforcement regime is broken, and leadership on this issue is needed to improve compliance with the National Construction Code and toughen up penalties.
Labor calls on the Liberals to show national leadership and to work with state and territory governments to ensure buildings, including those for commercial and residential use, are up to the high standards that Australians expect.
Each day the Morrison Government fails to respond to the widespread risks of these dangerous products, more Australian lives are put at risk.
Australians deserve to feel safe – especially in their own homes and workplaces.
