RE-ELECTION AS DEPUTY PRESIDENT AND CHAIR OF COMMITTEES
SENATOR SUE LINES
It is an honour to have been re-elected today by my fellow senators as Deputy President of the Senate and Chair of Committees for the 46th Parliament of Australia.
Co-operation within the Senate is important, as it is not controlled by the Government and therefore a place of lively debate and negotiation, as well as a chamber that exercises scrutiny and accountability on the executive.
This important role of the Senate as a house of review, including through the committee process, provides an opportunity for senators to represent their states and the interests of constituents in the Australian Parliament.
As Chair of Committees, I also acknowledge the role of the Committee of the Whole in undertaking detailed examination of legislation and proposing amendments, a critical element of the Senate’s work.
I look forward to working with President Scott Ryan, the Government and the Opposition’s Senate Leadership teams, all senators and the Senate Clerks in this next Parliament.
