Canberra has its say on the future of education

Parents, teachers, principals and experts in Canberra today provided their input into a national review of Australia’s education goals. 

Minister for Education Dan Tehan hosted the consultation session to listen to the views of education stakeholders about updating the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians. 

Mr Tehan thanked the participants for their thoughtful contributions to improving educational outcomes for every Australian. 

“Today I heard from people who are passionate about education – from early learning and child care to higher education,” Mr Tehan said. 

“Our Government is working with the sector and the community to develop a vision for the future of education in Australia and also a roadmap to help us get there. 

“We are updating Australia’s education goals to reflect the changing world we live in and to meet the requirements of the future. 

“One of the key points highlighted today was the need to focus on life-long learning in Australia. Education begins in early childhood and school and can continue to acquiring technical skills once in the workforce. 

“Australia has a world-class education system but it must continue to improve and evolve.” 

Ten consultations have already been held around Australia, including Tennant Creek, Adelaide and Cabramatta, and more than 150 written submissions have been received from stakeholders. 

The updated Melbourne Declaration will create a nationally consistent future direction for Australian education for the next decade.
