GOVERNMENT BACKING DOWN FROM MANDATORY DEALERSHIP CODE
BRENDAN O’CONNOR MP
The Government’s faux announcement today about the car retailing sector is nothing more than a reheated statement made in last year’s MYEFO, which simply says they will “consider” reforms.
The Government is using weasel words to try and look like it is taking action, but in actual fact there is nothing in today’s on-the-run media release to level the playing field between automotive dealers and multinational car manufacturers.
The complete lack of detail and a plan in today’s announcement deserves to be called out as there is nothing in there that will provide certainty of a mandatory code covering fair terms for small and family businesses.
Today’s media release does not commit the Government to a mandatory code of conduct, which raises the question, are they already backing down on a commitment flagged last year?
Labor went to the 2019 election with a comprehensive small business policy framework, including a mandatory automotive dealership code and protecting more small businesses from unfair contract terms by making them illegal and eligible for penalties.
Under this lacklustre and complacent government small business, workers, consumers, and manufacturers continue to suffer.
Labor will stand up for small businesses and workers to ensure they are not being ripped off. We will continue to fight to rebuild confidence in franchising, and the security of small business in Australia.
