GENDER PAY GAP AT RECORD LOW

The Morrison Government continues to deliver practical measures to support women in the workforce with today’s Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures showing the national gender pay gap has fallen to a new record low of 14 per cent.

 

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Women, Senator the Hon Marise Payne said, “The gender pay gap is heading in the right direction but we know there is more to do to keep closing it.”

 

Last year’s Women’s Economic Security Statement – the first-ever by an Australian government – has improved the lives of Australian women by opening up more opportunities for them. 

 

Today’s release of ABS average weekly earnings data for May 2019 indicates the Gender Pay Gap has fallen to its lowest level ever, down from 14.2 per cent in November 2018 to a new record low of 14 per cent, and has decreased by 3.2 percentage points since September 2013.

 

“Our government remains committed to giving women more life choices and ensuring they have an equal stake in our society and economy.

 

“As Minister for Women, I am determined to continue focusing on practical measures that will help open up greater pay equity and more opportunities for Australian women.

“The best way to ensure women are financially secure is for them to be able to access work, and be paid fairly for that work.”
