GOVERNMENT SILENT DESPITE MORE WARNING SIGNS
BRENDAN O’CONNOR MP
A report released today by Equity Economics reveals the dire position the Australian construction industry finds itself in, and yet the Morrison Government has no plan whatsoever to deal with the significant structural issues facing the industry.

The report, Shaky Foundations, reveals issues such as cracking apartments, increases in professional indemnity insurance and thousands of residential apartments built with combustible cladding, all of which are threatening a downturn in the sector along with public safety.

The cost of fixing problems in apartment buildings has been estimated to cost $6.2 billion.

Each day the Morrison Government fails to take leadership and respond to the building industry crisis, businesses are closing down, the safety and lives of Australians are put at risk.

The Government must heed these warnings along with other recent warnings from a number of economists and the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures, that show the construction sector slowing.

From shirking any responsibility for what is now a broken regulatory and enforcement regime in the building industry, to failing to deal with the importation of non-conforming building products and growing cases of phoenixing, the Government is not effectively dealing with the economic and safety crisis affecting the building and construction industry.

The construction industry is national and is critical to the Australian economy, but this government is failing to manage the many challenges it’s facing.

The Government needs to stop the blame game, take charge and outline a plan to fix this mess and ensure public safety.
