MCCORMACK’S PRE-ELECTION INFRASTRUCTURE ADVERTISING BINGE
CATHERINE KING MP
Deputy Prime Minister McCormack has been caught out binging on infrastructure advertising in the lead up to this year’s election, including up to $6 million in just one week.
This week, the ANAO’s Performance Audit on Government Advertising revealed the Government’s budget for the “Building our Future Phase 2” campaign was $19.8 million for the period 6 January to 7 April 2019.
This revelation builds on a recent answer to a Question on Notice, in which the Department confirmed that the Government spent over $13.7 million advertising the “Building our Future Phase 2” campaign in the first quarter of 2019.
Deputy Prime Minister McCormack spent up to $6 million on infrastructure advertising in the first week of April alone.
The damning Audit Office report also revealed that the Government potentially breached caretaker conventions, contracting newspaper advertisements for delivery during the election that could not be cancelled.
Deputy Prime Minister McCormack more than doubled the advertising binge of the 2016 election, with the QON answer revealing there was virtually no infrastructure advertising in 2016-17 and 2017-18 but $9 million in the lead up to the 2016 election.
While Australian communities are screaming out for transport upgrades this agenda-less Morrison Government is only interested in playing politics.
In the lead up to the last two elections, the Government spent almost $30 million of taxpayers money on advertising instead of delivering infrastructure.
Meanwhile, too many vital road and rail projects have been put off on the never never.
Deputy Prime Minister McCormack should be ashamed of his advertising binge and get to work to deliver a real infrastructure plan to improve productivity, boost jobs and curb rising congestion.
