DISCRIMINATION IS REAL AND MORE NEEDS TO BE DONE

Research conducted by the Centre for Social Research and Methods at the Australian National University reveals shocking levels of discrimination experienced by Asian Australians.

The study interviewed 2547 people – 765 of whom were Asian Australian – on their experiences of discrimination. 82 per cent of surveyed Asian Australians have experienced discrimination, with 65 per cent reporting discrimination in the workplace.

Some survey respondents stated they would choose an occupation where discrimination was less likely. This is the cost of social exclusion and a reason why senior roles in our companies, government and universities don’t accurately reflect the diversity in our community.

Encouraging open and inclusive workplaces counteracts isolation and increases workforce participation - creating an environment where an individual’s creativity and productivity can flourish. Whereas discrimination damages individual lives, and it diminishes all of us.

Racism and discrimination are real and more needs to be done.

Consistent national leadership in standing up for multiculturalism and multicultural communities is required.

Labor believes that every Australian is entitled to respect, to be proud of who they are, and to go about their life free from discrimination.
