VISIT TO SOUTHEAST ASIA
SENATOR THE HON PENNY WONG
This week I am visiting Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam.
I will be meeting with political leaders and senior officials, as well as businesspeople, civil society representatives and academics.
The visit is an opportunity to hear key partners’ views on the region, their role in it, and how Australia can improve its engagement.
I will be emphasising Labor’s commitment to strengthening our relationships in Southeast Asia.
Just last month, I accompanied Anthony Albanese to Jakarta on his first official overseas visit as Labor Leader.
Indonesia is the world’s third largest democracy, and by 2050 it is projected to be the world’s fourth largest economy.
On Tuesday in Jakarta, I will deliver a speech at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, as part of their lecture series on regional dynamics.
My speech will address how we can protect and advance our interests in an era of strategic competition between China and the United States.
Australia has a substantial defence relationship with Malaysia. It is also a major economic partner, with over 3,000 Australian companies exporting to Malaysia.
Vietnam has a deepening strategic partnership with Australia, and it is our second-fastest growing trade partner.
