MORE EVIDENCE OF DISCRIMINATION
ANDREW GILES MP
A new national survey has found that 82 per cent of Asian-Australians have experienced discrimination, along with 81 per cent of Australians of Middle Eastern background and 71 per cent of Indigenous Australians.
Most Asian-Australians reported being discriminated against at shops and restaurants, followed by in the workplace or educational institutions.
65 per cent of Asian-Australians said they experienced discrimination in the workplace or at school or university.
52 per cent of survey respondents said they suffered when renting or buying a house.
The message from this survey is clear: we need more open and inclusive workplaces – this will help counteract isolation and increases workforce participation.
We need to do more to create an environment where an individual’s creativity and productivity can flourish.
We need greater protections so that all Australians can get ahead without suffering from racism and discrimination.
Discrimination damages individual lives, and it diminishes all of us.
Racism and discrimination are real and more must be done to combat them.
Consistent national leadership in standing up for multiculturalism and multicultural communities is required.
Labor believes that every Australian is entitled to respect, to be proud of who they are, and to go about their life free from racism and discrimination.
