MANUFACTURING EMPLOYMENT HITS RECORD LOWS AS JOB VACANCIES ALSO DROP

Today’s quarterly industry labour force figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) are a sombre reflection of the Australian labour market.

The data for the August quarter reveals a record low number of Australians holding a job in the manufacturing industry.

People employed full time in the manufacturing industry also hit a record low, down 100,000 in 12 months.

It is no wonder there are signs of struggle in the manufacturing sector under a government that, at a time of great challenges for the global manufacturing industry, goaded the major car manufacturers to leave our shores.

What is the Morrison Government’s plan to help manufactures to grow and become competitive globally?

This data accompanies the latest job vacancies data, which fell by nearly 2 per cent over the quarter to be 1.9 per cent lower over the year. This is the first annual decline since 2014.

It also follows the monthly labour force figures which show a record high number of underemployed people generally at 1,167,300.
At the same time, the number of people unemployed rose to a 16 month high at 716,800.

This is the labour market under the Liberal Morrison Government and it is not stable.

Under the Morrison Liberal Government serious structural issues in the labour market continue to generate insecure work and low wages growth.

As Treasurer and now Prime Minister, Scott Morrison has presided over the lowest wages growth since records began.

The Reserve Bank, backed by economists and state governments, has implored the Government to lift investment in infrastructure to give the economy a shot in the arm, but the government has failed to act.

Australians know there is a problem. They are worried about their wages and their ability to pay their bills and make ends meet.
