The Morrison Government’s cruel and reckless Newstart liquid assets waiting period will hurt 10,000 Australian workers over the age of 55.

In response to questions from Labor senators at estimates, Department of Social Services staff revealed that 40,000 Australians on Newstart will be impacted by the changes over the next four years.

Australians over the age of 55 represent one in four Newstart recipients. Based on these figures, the proposed changes will impact 10,000 Australian workers over the age of 55.

Workers who receive a modest redundancy will be made to wait up to six months before they can access Newstart, even if they’ve worked in the same industry all their working lives.

Australians over 55 represent the largest cohort of Newstart recipients. And the number of over-55s has surged by 45 per cent under the Liberals and Nationals.

Middle-aged and older Australians have the most difficulty re-entering the workforce due to structural barriers and age discrimination.

The Morrison Government’s cruel and reckless Newstart cuts will force workers to eat their savings and place them at risk of falling into poverty.
