LABOR CONTINUES CALL FOR CREATION OF ANTARCTIC MARINE PARK
TERRI BUTLER MP
Labor shares the frustration of conservationists across Australia who have called for the creation of an East Antarctic Marine Protected Area, following last week’s failed bid.
It is disappointing that the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) did not agree to the proposal, which had been backed by Australia.
The establishment of the marine park would conserve biodiversity, assist in scientific research, including in relation to the impact of climate change, and would provide a reference area for the study of the impact of fishing in other areas.
The Australian government must continue to advocate for the region to be protected in advance of next year’s CCAMLR meeting.
