AUSTRALIAN WOMEN LET DOWN BY MORRISON GOVERNMENT

Today’s new figures revealing the unacceptably high gender pay gap underscores the urgent need for the Morrison Government to put together a reform agenda to close this gap.

The figures from Workplace Gender Equality Agency confirm the Liberals’ failure over the last six years to ensure Australians are paid equally and treated fairly in the workplace.

It just goes to show how out-of-touch the Treasurer was when he said in Parliament in September that the pay gap had ‘closed’.

For all of the political spin from the Prime Minister and Treasurer about the benefits of economic growth it is clear this is not true for many Australians – especially women.

The gender pay gap in Australia has remained stubbornly high over the past two decades and any minor changes have been widely attributed to the mining boom ending.

It's time the Morrison Government put forward a genuine reform agenda to close the gender pay gap and address the discrimination that is fuelling this gap.

Pay equity must be a central objective of Australia’s workplace relations system and the Morrison Government must address the rising cost of childcare.

There must also be a serious look at how government can help fix attitudes that contribute to women taking on the majority of unpaid caring responsibilities and work in Australian households.

The Morrison Government must do more to ensure Australian women are not worse off in the workplace.
