REGULAR AND ACCURATE DATA RELEASES
BRENDAN O’CONNOR MP
We welcome the release today of social security payments from the 28 February – 24 April 2020, which follows federal Labor’s calls.for weekly, accurate data releases.
The data is important for forecasting and analysis across government, business, academic and civil society institutions and stakeholders, particularly as it pertains to the health and economic responses to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Federal Labor’s Shadow Minister for Employment, Brendan O’Connor, and Shadow Minister for Families and Social Services, Linda Burney, recently wrote to the Government, calling for release of timely and accurate data for social security payments like Newstart and JobSeeker payments.
Not regularly releasing this data is in stark contrast to the practices in comparable jurisdictions, such as the United States that releases comparable data weekly.
The pace at which events related to COVID-19 have unfolded heightens need for the regular release of this information in user friendly data formats.
We now know the Government has this data on a weekly basis – but what we don’t know is why they won’t release it.
