ADDITIONAL FUNDING FOR FRONTLINE LEGAL SERVICES
MARK DREYFUS QC MP
Labor welcomes today’s announcement of additional funding for frontline legal services to support Australians impacted by COVID-19.
We especially welcome the fact that $20 million of the additional funding will assist those dealing with domestic violence.
Legal service providers play an essential role in supporting tens of thousands of Australians, including the most vulnerable members of our community.
This additional funding will help frontline legal service providers meet the increased demand on their services caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
It was thanks to pressure by Labor that the government backed down on funding cuts to legal service providers in the 2017 Budget which would have devastated the sector. It is heartening to see Mr Porter has a greater appreciation of the importance of these services than his predecessor.
