GOVERNMENT INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENTS SHOULD BUY AUSTRALIAN
CATHERINE KING MP
The Morrison Government’s recent conversion to the importance of buying local must include a commitment to prioritising local jobs and materials on Government-funded infrastructure projects.

Employing Australian workers and using Australian-made materials on Government-funded infrastructure projects creates more jobs all along the supply chain and ensures that Government investment remains in our community, rather than flowing to overseas companies.

It’s never been more important to buy Australian than right now.

Calling on consumers to buy local is one thing, but the Government should ensure that its own investments go towards creating as many Australian jobs as possible.

This should include building trains here and working with the States and Territories to smooth out production, lower costs and build skills and capability.

Over its first five budgets, the Coalition has over-promised and under-delivered on transport infrastructure by over five billion dollars.

By buying local the Morrison Government would not only create Australian jobs, but would ensure that the materials used in infrastructure projects are some of the highest quality in the world.

Previous economic crises have shown us that infrastructure investment must be a key part of any recovery. The Morrison Government must bring forward a comprehensive plan to invest in Australian infrastructure, as well as a plan to ensure that this investment creates as many Australian jobs in manufacturing and construction as possible.
