GOVERNMENT FAILING AUSTRALIAN CAR DEALERS
BRENDAN O’CONNOR MP
We have long been calling for the Morrison Government to level the playing field between automotive dealers and multinational car manufacturers, and while the new regulations are welcomed, we maintain some serious concerns.

The regulations were quietly released on Friday afternoon, a time this government likes to use to announce bad news stories – think Robodebt, and the $60 billion JobKeeper error.

What is in this announcement are they trying to hide?

Is it that the inadequate regulations fail to compensate car dealers left with stock when car manufacturers suddenly close down? Or provide security of tenure?

Is it that the regulations confirm the Government has broken its promise to provide a standalone code of conduct to cover fair terms for small businesses?

Is it because, despite Holden departing Australian shores, putting thousands of dealers in a precarious position, the government’s big solution is another round table?

Federal Labor encourages all parties to comment on the regulations and continue to pressure the Morrison Government to ensure they are strengthened.

Under this lacklustre and complacent government small business, workers, consumers, and manufacturers continue to suffer.

Labor will stand up for small businesses and workers to ensure they are not being ripped off. We will continue to fight to rebuild confidence in franchising, and the security of small business in Australia.
